Making your bed is one of those habits that you’re either all in or have zero time for. Some people have a real aversion to it, maybe it’s a mini-protest that has carried on from childhood, or a commitment to the idea that it makes no difference and besides what’s the point if you’re just going to unmake it every night anyways?
For those that do make their beds, you can bet that they stand by the routine and wouldn’t have it any other way. In fact, they would probably tell you that making the bed each morning can have a carry over impact on the rest of their day, even their lives! It may sound extreme, but here are some of the reasons why making your bed can improve your day (and your life!).

A sense of accomplishment
It’s a little thing, but the act of starting the day off with achieving something – creating order in the bedroom – can give a person a little boost. Especially if there are challenges ahead (and, let’s face it, life can be challenging in so many different ways), making the bed is like starting the day off with a win, giving a person a little boost of confidence to face what lays ahead.
Routine, routine, routine
If you are trying to make improvements in other areas of your life – diet, or exercise, or reading more, or less screen time, or more patience, or whatever it is! – you know that to really chance a habit starts with discipline and routine. And what’s better than to start the day with some routine by making the bed? It’s all about creating new neural pathways so that new habits can be formed, and one good habit can lead into the next. By making your bed each morning, especially if this is a new habit, can create a new long-lasting habit, which can help make other new habits easier, too! Progress!
Clean space, better concentration
You might have heard the saying – the state of your home reflects the state of your mind. Not sure if there is any science backing up this bold statement, but there is something very comforting and freeing by having a space that is clean and organized. On the flipside, having clutter can be so distracting and can make it hard to concentrate. Keeping the bed made means adds a sense of order to a bedroom, and can even encourage you to clean the rest of your room and/or your home.
Excitement for sleep
At the end of the day, it’s really nice to crawl into a bed that has been made – pulling back the covers, fluffing the pillows – it’s all a pleasant ritual that can signal to the body that it’s ready to wind down and prepare for sleep. Especially if you are going through a situation where it’s hard to fall asleep at night and to stay asleep throughout the night, creating sleep rituals at the end of the day can help the brain release hormones that encourage sleep. And you can’t crawl into a nicely made bed at the end of a long day unless you make it each morning!
Sleep hygiene
Let’s just admit it… there are times when perhaps it’s been a little too long between washes when it comes to our sheets, duvet covers, and pillow cases. Making the bed each morning can give us a little more insight into the conditions of our linens (how did it get so yellowed?! for example) and can actually encourage us to take a little better care all around of the place we sleep in. We all know how much of our lives we spend in bed, so it’s a good idea to make sure that it’s a clean, hygienic, comfortable place to spend a third of our lives.
If you are wondering if this is all a bunch of malarkey, you won’t know for sure unless you try. And who knows? Maybe making your bed each day might just give you that little boost of confidence or self-esteem that can carry through into other areas of your life. It’s definitely worth a go!
