As you get older, you may start to find that your old sleeping habits are not letting you get the best night’s sleep you can possibly get each night. Many people who once regularly slept on their stomachs may often find that they are waking up feeling soreness in their necks and lower backs especially. This is due to the fact that sleeping on your stomach forces both your spine and your muscles and joints into irregular, asymmetrical positions where unnecessary strain is placed on your body. Despite the amount of pain sleeping on your stomach may cause you, it can be difficult to train yourself not to continue to sleep in this position. Fortunately, there are a few simple ways you can prevent yourself from continuing to sleep on your stomach.

Use a Body Pillow
Many people try using a normal head pillow as a barrier that prevents them from turning on to their stomachs while they sleep, but these pillow are often inadequate, and can cause your legs to turn over, while your torso remains on it’s side, causing your spine to become twisted. A body pillow is long enough to prevent your entire body from turning all the way over while you sleep, allowing you to remain on your side and put less strain on your back and neck.
Ribbon Technique
Many people who sleep alone find it difficult to stop themselves from turning over during the night, even with the help of a pillow barrier. To add a little extra resistance to prevent yourself from turning onto your stomach when you sleep, try tying a ribbon to your bedside table and then gently tying the ribbon to your wrist. When you try and turn over as you sleep, the ribbon will restrict your motion and prevent you from turning all the way.
